MadeIT Vouchers
MadeIT Vouchers is a free gift voucher plugin for WordPress and WooCommerce, with a balance customers can spend over several orders. The Pro add-on adds the finishing touches: more PDF designs and colours, your own wording, partial refunds and flexible validity.

Installation and your first voucher
Requirements: WordPress 6.6+, PHP 8.0+ with the GD extension (FreeType), an active WooCommerce and working outgoing email (the PDF is sent by email).
- Install and activate WooCommerce and MadeIT Vouchers.
- Edit a simple product (or add a new one). In the General tab of Product data tick Voucher. The product becomes virtual and sold individually.
- Set the price to the voucher value. Make a separate product for every amount (for example 50, 100, 200).
- In MadeIT Vouchers → Settings choose the colour and the validity period.
Vouchers are not created by hand in the admin. The code is created automatically once an order for a voucher product is paid.
Selling a voucher Free
On the product page the buyer chooses the recipient, with a preview of the voucher below.
- For me: the voucher goes to the buyer's email address.
- As a gift: the buyer enters the recipient's email and an optional message that goes into the voucher email. The address is checked before the item is added to the cart.
- A note about the validity ("Valid for X months after the order is paid") and that the balance can be spent over several purchases.
The choice of recipient and the message are saved with the cart item and the order, so they show in emails and in the order screen.
Issuing codes and the PDF Free
The code is created when the order is paid (status Processing or Completed, or a recorded payment). Every unit of the product is a separate voucher.
- Codes are unique and stored encrypted. Only a hash is used for look-ups.
- The voucher email has a PDF in your shop colour attached: the code, the value, the expiry date and the buyer's message. It is sent once per order item.
- The validity counts from the day of payment. Changing the default period later does not affect vouchers that were already issued.
Redeeming a code in the cart Free
A "Have a voucher code?" field appears above the cart and above the checkout, in both the classic and the block version of WooCommerce. You can also place the field anywhere with the <code>[madeit_voucher_redeem]</code> shortcode.
- The customer enters the code and clicks "Apply voucher". The balance reduces the amount to pay and the order summary shows a "Voucher" line.
- A voucher can be spent over several orders until the balance reaches zero.
- A voucher pays for regular products, but not for another voucher. When the cart only holds vouchers the customer sees a message.
- An invalid, expired or empty code gives an error message. A code can be removed from the cart.
Balance reservation
When the customer places the order, the amount is <strong>reserved</strong> on the voucher. After payment it is settled. If the order is cancelled or the payment fails, the reservation is released and the balance returns. On a full refund the unused part of the payment is restored to the voucher automatically.
The vouchers screen and history Free
MadeIT Vouchers → Vouchers shows a list with three counters: all vouchers, active with balance and the default validity.
- Search by voucher ID, order number or the recipient's email.
- Status filters: Active, Expired, No balance, Revoked.
- The voucher details show the recipient, status, value, available balance, expiry date, the order and the list of operations.
History of operations
| Operation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Issued | The voucher was created after the order was paid. |
| Reserved | The amount was blocked while the order is placed. |
| Settled | The order payment completed, the amount was spent. |
| Released | The order was cancelled or failed, the balance returned. |
| Refunded | A refund of the order restored the balance. |
| Revoked | The order that bought the voucher was refunded and the voucher had not been spent. |
| Extended | The expiry date was moved (Pro). |
Settings: appearance and validity Free
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| PDF design | The free plugin has the Classic design. |
| Colour scheme | Your own shop colour. It is used for the PDF and for the forms on the product page, cart and checkout. |
| Validity in months | From 1 to 60. It applies to new vouchers. |
Next to the form you see a preview of the PDF and a preview of the form colours.
PDF designs and colours PRO
- Three PDF designs: Classic, Modern and Botanical, with a live preview.
- Preset colours: Navy, Forest, Berry and Copper on top of your own shop colour. The chosen colour is applied to the PDF and the forms.
Editing texts PRO
The Texts tab groups every customer-facing text: the product page, the PDF title and labels, the cart and checkout messages and the email subject and body.
Available placeholders: <code>{months}</code>, <code>{code}</code>, <code>{amount}</code>, <code>{expires}</code>, <code>{message_section}</code> and <code>{message}</code>. Saved texts replace the defaults, and fields you do not change keep using the plugin's translations.
Partial refunds and extending validity PRO
Partial refund
- Create the partial refund in WooCommerce as usual.
- Open MadeIT Vouchers → Settings → Refunds and enter the order ID, the WooCommerce refund ID and the amount in cents to restore.
- The balance returns to the voucher and an entry appears in its history. You settle the rest with the original payment method.
The free plugin restores full refunds automatically.
Extending validity
Open a voucher in MadeIT Vouchers → Vouchers, pick a new date under "Extend validity until" and click "Extend voucher". The date can only be moved forward, and the change is recorded in the history.
Pro license and updates PRO
- Download the add-on from your customer account and upload it in Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
- Activate it. It needs MadeIT Vouchers and WooCommerce to be active.
- In MadeIT Vouchers → License paste the 32-character key and click "Save and activate".
Updates for 12 months under Dashboard → Updates. After the license expires the add-on keeps working without new versions. The key covers one site.
Troubleshooting
- The PDF is not generated: the server needs the PHP GD extension with FreeType support.
- The customer did not get the email: check WordPress email (wp_mail), set up SMTP and check the spam folder.
- The code is "invalid": check its status in MadeIT Vouchers (expired, no balance, revoked).
- The voucher field is missing on the product page: check that "Voucher" is ticked and that it is a simple product.
- The Pro tabs do not appear: the free plugin must be active and the add-on activated.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the free plugin as well?
Yes. MadeIT Vouchers Pro is an add-on and needs the free MadeIT Vouchers plugin from WordPress.org to be installed and active.
Is anything in the free plugin locked until I buy Pro?
No. The free plugin is complete: vouchers with a balance, PDF by email, redeeming in the cart and checkout, validity and a full history. Pro adds extra designs, text editing, partial refund restore and validity extension.
What happens to my vouchers if I deactivate Pro?
Nothing is lost. Vouchers, balances and history belong to the free plugin. Designs and texts from Pro fall back to the free defaults until you reactivate it.
What happens when the license expires?
The installed version keeps working without limits. Only new versions and support are paused until you renew.
How many sites can I use one license on?
One license covers one site. You can detach the site in your customer account and activate the license somewhere else.
Does it work with the WooCommerce block checkout?
Yes. The free plugin supports both classic and block cart and checkout, and Pro builds on it.
Does the add-on send customer data to MadeIT Labs?
No. It sends only the license key and the site address to check the license and download updates.
